The reason? I'm going deer hunting and I'm not even carrying a weapon. Last
season I hunted at Little Lakes Ranch and one of the owners told me he
wanted to take a disabled veteran hunting but couldn't find one! I told him
I didn't think it would be that hard and told him I'd take care of it and
coordinate/film the hunt for the show. Little did I know exactly how
difficult that simple task would be!

I contacted the local Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Recruiters, telling
them what I wanted to do. They were all in favor of it and would be
discussing it with their superiors. Nothing happened. I went to the National
Guard and talked with the commander there. He thought it was a great idea.
Nothing happened. I talked to Public Information Officers assigned to this
area and they thought it was a good idea. Nothing happened. My son in law is
a captain in the Air Force, he tried to get the information I needed, he
couldn't get anywhere either. I went as far as the Pentagon, talking to some
two star general and still couldn't find anyone that was willing to help. I
did Google searches and sent emails all over the country, no response.

It wasn't until I got an email from retired Msgt Jeff Johnson of the Wounded
Warrior Regiment of the USMC that I finally got some action. He knew of a
Marine in Missouri that wanted and needed a trip like this. I talked to the
man's wife about the hunt and told her that the hunt, lodging and meals
would be donated by Little Lakes Ranch and that all they needed was to get
here. She was very grateful and after talking to her, I realized they didn't
have a lot of resources to play with. So I said I'd "see what I could do" to
help them out.

I jumped in the truck and started my mission, talking to any that could help
me out with product or cash donations.

Gas Cards in sufficient amounts to make the round trip were donated by
Gillespie Convenience & Fuel.

Cold weather hunting clothes were donated by Mel's Trading Post.

A taxidermist will be honored to cape and mount this soldier's trophy at no
charge.

When I called the wife and told her of the donations, she was happy beyond
belief, but told me that while her husband was hospitalized, his deer rifle
was stolen! I told her that it was no problem, he could use my rifle if
needed. I talked to a couple gunshops, but either the rifles they had in
stock were right handed (Sean is a southpaw) or in a heavier caliber than I
wanted someone two weeks out of the hospital to be shooting.

So I got on the phone and made a call to Garrett Cartridge Company and
talked with Randy, the president. He and his father Clyde (a WWII vet)
donated sufficient money for me to buy a Savage 110 left hand bolt action
rifle chambered in 7mm08, a good deer cartridge with mild recoil. But I
decided that it needed a scope and accessories. So I went back to Hodag Gun
and Loan, they gave me a scope, sling and ammo.

Beaver Dam Argo donated the delivery and use of an Argo 6x6 Frontier for me
to move this vet around the woods and get his deer out.

I'm going over tomorrow to present Sean with his new gear, which he knows
nothing about! I'm going to film his hunt and make a show out of it. All
associated parties will receive a DVD copy of this special episode so they
know where their donations went and how much it means to one Marine.

I was a little disappointed in some responses to my request. It's easy to
put a yellow ribbon magnet on your tailgate, it's easy to put a sticker on
your door or a poster in your window say "I support our troops" but when
push comes to shove, unfortunately they're not as willing as they say when
they actually have to DO something!

The best part? All of this came together on Veteran's Day!!!

Steve sorry to hear you had the typical experience. Going through
official channels is usually pretty hopeless, especially in these type
of cases. They just don't care enough to do anything, and are afraid
the injured Vet might have a platform to talk about their lousy
treatment. Before folks jump me, my wife's an Army DAV, I'm prior
service AF, my Nephew is a Navy Dav, and the wife went back to work
for the AF to help the guys on the ground.
If you've seen the news they, finally, have a study saying Gulf War
Syndrome is a real condition, what a shock...
I'm thrilled you are tasking care of the average grunt who put it on
the line. I'd suggest the folks over at Soldiers For The Truth as a
resource for future stuff.
I'll be looking forward to the story. SFTT might like to write it up
too.

Good stuff Steve,

Glad to hear you were able to put it all together for someone that is
fighting for our freedom. I hope you post a trip report of the hunt.

Thanks for your efforts,

In case anyone would like to read about the hunt with a disabled Marine,
Shawn, and find out the "rest of the story," click on the following link.

Steve, that's awesome. Thanks for taking the time to make a vet feel

appreciated for the sacrifices he's made. With his refreshed excitement
for hunting and a great rifle to use I hope he finds a hunting buddy in
his local area to keep at it.

Gary, I do too. We stayed up late Tuesday night, Shawn and I, just talking.
He said that very few of his friends come around any more. He said one of
them told him "You Changed" and stopped coming over. Well of course he
changed! Being in a battle zone, taking lives and seeing friends go into
body bags, then spending four years in and out of a hospital will do that to
a guy! But a true friend would take that into consideration...

Seconded. Thanks a million for sticking with it, and making this
happen. Thanks to all the folks who helped out too.
