Now, I've heard critics say that anime in general
is highly derivative and unoriginal, and the
Product Placement/Pokemon-clone genre
especially so. But Bakugan takes the cake.
Take this morning's episode... it had one of the
Sailor Starlights (the white-haired girl with the
ponytail) dueling against some guy who looked
suspiciously like Terry Bogard. Dude used the
mechanical centipede from Gatchaman, while
the girl used... Mazinger Z (not under that
actual name of course, but anyone with even
a passing knowledge of Mazinger could recognize
him a mile away, even if he is brown and has
a shield in this version).
Then at the end, somebody with Protoman's
visor* and Super Saiyan hair and wearing a
labcoat shows up (I suppose that counts as
some sort of originality) and talks to Terry
Bogard.
The show itself always struck me as "it
only wishes it were Yu-Gi-Oh," and I always
thought it was about the brown-haired kid
(who looks like someone I can't place)
travelling around with a slightly older Sasami,
but.... wow. I didn't expect Mazinger.
* Actually on second thought, the visor
probably more closely resembles those
worn by the Snake Oil gang. |
