I see that Chessville's Clyde Nakamura has published 2 articles in
this week's edition. The first includes zipped pgn file containing 743
chess games & lines by IM Michael Basman, including such opponents as
Leonid Stein, Robert Huebner, Vassily Smyslov, Anthony Miles, Svetozar
Gligoric, John Nunn, Nigel Short, Stefan Buecker, Michael Adams, etc.
Secondly, Clyde provides a general appreciation of Michael Basman's
contribution to Opening Theory, especially wing openings and gambits
in another article:-
"Michael J. Basman (born in 1946 at St Pancras, London, England) is an
English chess player, and International Master, who is a prolific
writer, chess teacher, chess coach and an organizer who has made many
contributions to the field of unorthodox flank chess openings..."
The downloads are free.

Did he manage to win or draw any of them? |

Casually checking my database for Basman games, and looking for
opponents who have been among or semi-close to the world's elite, I
find Basman wins against Timman, Miles, Andersson, Nunn, Adorjan,
Benko, and Mecking, and draws against Botvinnik, Tal, Hort, and
Gheorghiu. Overall, though, his record against top GMs is not all that
good. |

Laugh! Yeah - that is exactly the right question. Apparently not, and
he seemed to surprise the hell out of serious opposition much in the
style of Tony Miles, who took it up a notch, and as you know once
opened 1. ... b5 against Karpov [and won] I once thought Basman went
the whole distance to gaining his IM status by only playing
1. g4 or
1. ... g5
But that is actually not true.
I never met Michael in person, but I believe our own Sam Sloan here
did, and taught him everything he knew :)

Not quite. The game actually opened 1.e4 a6. Miles played b7-b5 on

Did you ever see the final of BBCs Master game? The absolute best
chess tv series ever made. Unfortunately you can't even get it as DVD
from BBC anymore since they sold the rights to some outfit who then
went bust. Walter Browne, I know, has a copy - anyone else here ever
seen it?
The final pitted Miles and Karpov together, and the result never
appeared because of a BBC strike. If you want the score for that game
try Ray Keene ;)

They made six series, and there are two books giving the games and the
players' commentaries (see http://www.antiqbook.co.uk/boox/glynns/034486.shtml).
IIRC, the first two series were British players only (have a feeling
Hartston won them both) and Karpov won series 3. Short won a later
series when he was about 15. |
