I live in SW Utah. We get a lot of red tailed hawks, easily identifiable.
I saw a large hawk on a power pole. I got fairly close with my ATV by going
slowly. My vision is not great, but I could see that his head appeared to
have a reddish hue around it from the light shining through it. Grey body
with white or light tan interspersed.
Now, the different part. When he took off, he came right over me. His tail
feathers were a nice delta shape, but looking up, they were all tan. I
could not see sky between them, so they were tight. If it were a red
tailed, they would have been very reddish, right?
I'm looking through my bird book now to ID.
Any ideas? At least 18" high, and I think a bit more.

There is a lot of variation within hawk species, and especially in
Red-Tailed Hawks. It's possible that what you saw was one of the
western morphs of that species. |

Not necessarily. Immatures do not have red tails. Ferruginous Hawk
is also a possibility in your area, and although the description
doesn't fit well, you might want to study them so you are more
ready when you do see one.
