yes I have seen spelled both ways many times. A word with its orgins
in latin from altare, and middle english, alter an altar. Something
that may confuse it even more, alter Christus -- meaning another christ.
English such a miswritten language with all its words that sound
so much alike yet means somthing differant. A few below that I see
sometimes too

I can't help but note that a good half of the "EI" words
are either German ("holstein", "fraulein"), Japanese ("nisei"),
or Greek ("pharmacopeia"); and that's not even counting the
occasional Chinese proper noun ("Peiping"). Besides, *I*
pronounce the last three of those like "ay" anyway!
