I've always wondered this.
It depends on how you define "purr". Taxonomically speaking, the
difference between a "big cat" (subfamily pantherinae, subsuming
lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars) and a "small cat"
(subfamily
felinae, subsuming all other known living cats) is the hyoid
bone,
which in small cats is rigid but in big cats is flexible. "Big
cats"
by that definition can only make a "purring" noise on exhalation,
while "small cats" can do it both ways. The technical term for
the
purring noise a "big cat" makes when it exhales is "chuffing".
While
a mountain lion is larger than a leopard, a mountain lion is a
"small
cat" and thus they can purr on inhalation, as can cheetahs, which
also are not "big cats".
So if you consider "chuffing" to be a form of purr then all cats
can
purr, if you consider "chuffing" to be different from "purring"
then
only "small cats" can purr.

Thanks John, interesting read. I never knew a mountain lion was
larger than leopard. Both are smaller than a Jaguar though right?
Right. And some leopards are larger than some mountain lions, but
on
avarage mountain lions are a little bigger.
THis makes sense mountain lions have been attacking humans
in the US (plus domestic cats and dogs).
There's even been cases of mountain lions taking people down
while riding their mountain bikes.
I'd guess no amount of cajolery or bribery would stop a mountain
lion attack -- even if you have many feline friends who would vouch
for your kindness to felines.
The normal ecological niche of humans is "cat food" you know.
The key is to not act like either prey or another cat issuing a
challenge. The conventional recommendation is stand your ground,
stand tall, make loud noises, back away slowly. If that doesn't work,
then fight back as best you can, prefarbly with a stout stick or any
other such implement (a Masai lion spear would be ideal but most New
World police agencies and park rangers frown on people carrying such
things around in public). Do _not_ turn your back or run--that's what
prey does and you cannot outrun a cat.
|
I can't even outrun domestic cats! I'm sure any cat on the face of the
planet, no matter how old could catch me (as long as they have all
4 feet in operational condition).
I doubt I'll ever see a Mountain Lion, two of my friends says they
always look for Mountain Lions on their hikes and never
have seen one (and they're both avid backpackers too).
I've seen some coyotes and snakes on my hikes and that's about
it.

Birmans are absolutely beautiful. We had a wonderful boy called Louis in
our rescue shelter a couple of months ago, needless to say he wasn't there
long :-)

Pohjolan pakkonatoisuudesta omaan arvoonsa. Nykyinen kansantahtoa pilkkanaan
pitävä pakkoliittymisuhkailut alkaa syödä myös hallintomme kykyä tajuta
kansaansa laajemmin. Kaikkein keskeisintä demokratian mukaisen
kansalaisvastustuksen tallaamisen päälle on täysin keskustelemattomuuksiin
jäänyt fakta, miksi pitää mennä yhteisöön jonka liittymisen naapurusto
tulkitsee suorastaan sodanjulistukseksi heille. Lisäksi tarpeeton
liittyminen maksaa miljoonia, joita ei haluta kansalle laskea, miksei?
Onko tilanne tulkittava siltä pohjalta, että NATO-jäsenyyden todelliset syyt
sanoi TVO:n toimitusjohtaja P. Simola YVA-kokouksesissaan:"Venäjän Majak
tuottaa 100% koko Euroopan ydinpolttoaineesta, kuten Suomen kaiken uraanin
jalosteista. Koska Majak sulkee toiminnan 2008 Putinin sanoin
kanmnattamattomana, on tilalle saatava Suomeen vastaava laitos

Alan arvostuksesta kertoo varsin suoraan se miten alan ammattityöväestö
suhtautuu tekemiseensä. Siitä voidaan ottaa esimerkkejä laajasti.
Ammattilaiset haluavat usein myös jälkikasvustaan työnsä jatkajia.
Yritysmaailma on pullollaan työstä ylpeitä isältä pojalle siirrettyä
sukuosaamista.
erota uraania hiilimustasta taatusti.
Rupesin todella ihmettelemään miksi. Ja ennenkaikkea KETKÄ ovat maassamme
nykyään ydinalan ammattilaisia? Heitä on maassamme tietysti tuhansittain,
Toinen keskeinen piirre
on niinikää lainvastaiset ylipitkät jopa 12h työvuorot ja loputtomat
ylityöjaksot vailla omaa päätäntäoikeutta. Kolmas ominaisuus on tekemänsä
työn arkaluontoisuus, mikä tarkoittaa orjallista vaitiololupauspakotetta
uhkailu-ukaaseineen ydinjohdolta. Esim. OL-1,OL-2 ja OL-3 työmailla ei
KETÄÄN saa mennä vapaasti jututtamaan tekemisistään ja määräys on ehdoton,
vaikka maamme pitäisi olla demokratia. Mikä kertoo myös alan valonarkuudesta
ja hämäryydestä enemmän kuin paljon.
Niinikää ydintyöläisten palkkataso on enmemmän kuin romahtanut loistonsa
päivistä. Jos lasketaan Suomen ydintyöläisten ansiotasot saadaan tyytyä jopa
7 euron tuntipalkkoihin!
Säteilyvaaransa takia heillä on
normaalityöläisiä ankarammat
lääkärintarkastusvaateet jne. Ydintyöläiselle on kauhistus , jos lapsensa
tulisivat samaan työhön jatkajiksi.Voi vaan hämmästellä kuinka nopeasti
ydinalan mega-arvostus on romahtanut nykyiseen mitäänsanomattomuuteensa.
heijastellen sitä pettymystä mitä ydinvoiman loisteliaitten lupausten
romahdettua tshernobyliin on tuottanut. Voi vaan arvailla, että kuinkan näin
totaalisen pettymyksen ala saa enää jatkossa KETÄÄN kiinostumaan sen
ylläpidosta? |
