I'm always in awe of Galen's ability to go through multi-disc anime DVD sets
in astoundingly short periods of time. I deliberately try to avoid buying
big sets because I find it hard to find the time to watch them, given the
time constraints of Real Life and also the number of new anime series that I
watch as they are being broadcast. So while Galen wrote last year about the
R2 DVD box release of the original "Dr. Slump and Arale-chan" TV series from
the early 1980s, I've only recently started to go through them in a
systematic manner although I also bought the box sets at the same time as
Galen.
I watched the remake of "Dr. Slump" 10 years ago when it was first
broadcast, and I bought the DVD box sets for that too, but re-watching that
series will have to wait until I finish with the original series. So at this
point in time I am enjoying the very retro humor of the original series, and
comparing it to my memories of the re-make, and to some of the other series
that were contemporary to DS&AC, such as "Urusei Yatsura" and "Stop!
Hibari-chan".
One thing for certain, the humor in DS&AC was much more low brow than in
either UY or SHC. Never-the-less, it is still quite effective. The scene
where Arale uses chopsticks to chase a cockroach around a table in a raman
shop is priceless, and sure enough she catches it. And you have the frequent
flatulence and toilet jokes for which the series is notorious.
But there are many other more subtle jokes going on, such as in the episode
where a mole cricket goes into Arale's open mouth one night, and the next
day Arale is horrifyingly polite and well-behaved. The books that Arale are
studying have titles in roman letters such as "Mechaniko Muzukashii Hon" -
which means "Difficult Mechanics Book" - and "HaHiHuHe Hon" - which are the
"h" sounds in the Japanese language. Later on, when Arale is finally back to
normal and causing the usual commotion, Senbei is trying to read a book
called "Majime Hon" - which means "Serious Book".
It doesn't take Senbei long to be outside in the dark, looking for another
mole cricket.
BTW - one of the additional great parts of DS&AC is the presence of the
unmistakable voice of Toshio Furukawa who plays Tarou.

I am always amazed that no one has licensed this show, let alone
fan-subbed it.
Even if the '80s version is "too old", the '90s version isn't and has
some episodes even guest star Son Goku. Seems marketable to me. |

You would think someone would pounce on that one. |

What I found really strange was that neither series even received a Japanese
video release until this past year - that's 25 years for the original series
and 10 years for the 90's version.
