OK, many Brits, with the exception of June and possibly some others here,
still spend a lot of holiday time in Malta... that's why I asked here.
I havent been either :-)
Me neither. I suspect a lot of Brits mentally associate it with
Service bases, rather than desirable holiday destination.

I certainly think of it like that. Malta has absolutely zero attraction to
me. The first and only time I was on Malta was on our trip back from
Tripoli when Ghaddafi chucked the allied forces out in the 60s. All I
remember about it is an airport, but to me it's still an island with
"something to do with the army".

Do they? I admit i can't really remember what I thought over 30 years agi
when we chose it as a holiday destination. We did see a naval ship or two
in the harbour, so whatever I had thought could have been altered. But I
don't think Malta - army now. I think Malta - ooh they had great melons at
that hotel, driving that beat up rented mini was hairy, didn't I get a good
tan, etc. Maybe I was just a little bit too young to think Army?

Old enough if you experienced it, to leave a lasting impression of
something, if not the whole thing. But what of those of us that didn't?

Then you would only have heard small hints of Greek mythology and the
Knights of Malta. I think you should rethink, but maybe not in wet winter. |

No idea. I only spoke for myself. I'm sure it's really a very nice place
but I doubt I'll ever find out. Even those I know that have been and told
me about it didn't really inspire me to want to go for myself.

probably, the ones I spoke to were looking for sun with fish and chips,
english spoken, they may of course be entirely untypical. But i'm no
extensive traveller, anyway, preferring to explore a few places in depth.

Still a good bit. They make quite a lot of the Ulysses thing. I should
think most of the ancient architecture and ruins are 12th-14th c. I read
that there is quite a lt of prehistoric stuff, which I didn't knw about.
Nature is a big deal. Walking is encouraged and easy. I suppose you could
row your own boat to the other island, but thought I would not. |

Gozo has a regular ferry. I think Comino has too but perhaps not so
regularly as it is very small. |

The only Service Base I saw was the Grand Harbor and grand is not the
word to use. It is a beautiful sight in its own right.
But don't take my word for it. it has been mumble mumble years since I
have been there. Things change.
