|
|
hey, guys...
Wondering what the consensus would be on, say, the top 10-15 songs
from the Motown era?
And, names of dances that were done at the time? I've heard of the
Madison and the Stroll, but what were some of the others? Could Hand
Jive be included in that group?
I know, I know, I should probably dig out my copy of HAIRSPRAY, LOL,
but any input would be appreciated.

Stroll and Hand Jive were before Motown.
There are only two ways of telling the complete truth - anonymously and
posthumously.

Jup. They just barely missed. Motown was the name of Barry Gordy's record |
company, founded in 1959. I think that Motown has come to represent a
musical genre, the "Detroit sound" (Supremes, etc.), more than it represents
an era.

As you likely know, Motown Records was best known for R&B, pop, soul, and
hip hop music. I don't recall any botique dance like you're naming as
having been specifically identified with the Motown sound, although the way
people danced to soul music like that of Marvin Gaye likely was more closely
identified with Motown. Since Motown was so successful as a crossover for
black artists hitting the mainstream, the mainstream dances of that time
seemed to be more generic across the board for the musical genres, as well
as disco beginning of course in the 70's. Doo-wop music, which originated
in the Northeast, also was popular in the 50's and 60's and disco of course
began in the 70's.
Motown Records existed between 1959 and 1988. Most of the dances listed
here were identified with doo-wop rather than Motown:
The Stroll: 1957
Hand Jive: 1958
The Madison: late 1950s to mid 1960s
The Twist: 1960 (Doo-wop pop)
The Pony: 1960 (Doo-wop)
The Swim: ? (Doo-wop)
The Jerk: ? (Doo-wop)
The Boogaloo: ? (Latin, Jump Blues, R&B, Soul, and traces of Doo-wop)
The Watusi: 1962 (Doo-wop)
The Mashed Potato: 1962 (Doo-wop)
