A couple of weeks ago I noticed a link at the bottom of one of Giovanni
Wassen's posts here at r.a.a.m. to something called "My anime list". So I
checked it out via Giovanni's link (http://myanimelist.net/profile/extatix)
and found a rather interesting place to put my anime viewing records.

For years I have been keeping annual Excel spreadsheets of the anime that I
watch, but it has always been somewhat of a bother for me to tabulate totals
from all of those spreadsheets. So I decided to spend (waste? <LOL>) the
time to try out My Anime List, and after typing some of my anime viewing
history into an account there I found that it did meet my needs for an
all-encompassing location for my viewing "obsession".

So I eventually dumped in data on what has turned out to be 1028 anime TV
series, OAVs, movies and miscellaneous things that I've watched over the
past 12 years. The data base breaks down my entries into those anime that I
am currently viewing, those that I've finished watching, those that I've
dropped, those that I have "on hold", and those that I hope to watch in the
future.

As you might expect if you read my quarterly reviews of new anime, my
"dropped" list is the largest of the 5 categories by far, but I surprised
myself when I realized how many series I've actually completed.

I'm not dropping my annual spreadsheets, because My Anime List doesn't allow
for the sort of quarterly and annual assessments that I like to make, and
instead I am entering my on-going anime viewing into both systems.

If you happen to have any interest in those 1028 anime that I've entered,
you can find my list by typing:

dbaranyi

into the search box at the main page:

http://myanimelist.net/

and choose "users"; or else you can go directly to my "profile" page at:

http://myanimelist.net/profile/dbaranyi

BTW - I have no idea what many of the functions/headings/etc are of MAL. For
example, I suspect that "Time (days)" has something to do with the number of
episodes times the time in minutes of each episode, but I haven't checked it
out to find out for certain.

BTW II - If any of you folks also have a "MAL" page, please share it with
us.

Thanks -

Yeah, it's an indicator of how much time you wasted on anime Smile Sometimes
it changes by the way, one day I was at 30.7 days, the next on 30.5 days.
It seems people change the running times from time to time.

MAL is a nice way to organise it but I don't really like the way Neo Tokyo
was separated in three different entries for example.

I wonder how many other Otaku are obsessive enough to keep lists like
this. I readily admit that I keep a list of all the anime I've
watched, but that's more utilitarian than obsessive -- I need
something to take to the rental store because otherwise my failing
memory would never remember what I had and hadn't seen. OTOH I am
obsessive about other lists: I have a list of all the books I've
completed going back to the middle of 1963, I write "after action
reports" for wargames I've played (all handwritten, currently on
volume 14), etc.

Particularly interesting are the totals. I counted up entries on my
viewing list back in 2002 and came up with something like 100+
movies/TV specials and around 4,500 combined TV/OAV episodes.

I suspect making and keeping lists is a fairly common hobby-action.

I need my regular spreadsheets so that I know which new episodes I need to
hunt down.

I write digital AARs when I am war-gaming, but I never keep them after
posting them at the relavent sites. (Is anything ever "gone" from today's
Web? <LOL>)

It sounds like it is time for you to update that anime list then. <g>

The nice thing about My Anime List is that it does do a grand total at the
bottom of the List page. According to the database's calculations, I've
watched something like 10,500 "episodes" - however it defines them. So given
that you have six more years to add to your totals since the last time you
did them, you ought to be at least in the same ballpark.

Happy obsessing! <L>

Giovanni - I noticed from your MAL list that you are following different new
series than I am, so you ought to post some comments here at r.a.a.m. on how
those series are coming along.

Sure!

One Outs: Weird sport series, off course it's about tough men trying to be
the toughest in their branch of sports (baseball), it's just so full of
cliches. Except: Tokuchi is hired by a Japanese team on the weirdest
contract you can imagine, he gets money for each out he makes but has to
pay big bucks when he gives up a point. It's slow and full of things you
know are going to happen (like him making the losers in his team better
baseball players). It's really a wonder why I keep watching actually,
perhaps because I just like baseball Smile Seen 5 eps.

Michiko to Hatchin: Over the top, stylish, dumb as hell but a real treat. I
love the music and the animation but I got no clue as what is going to
happen. Escaped convict and daughter try to stay out of the hands of
justice and have to find some time to bond? Seen 3 eps.

Ga-Rei Zero: The first two eps were clearly at the end of the story, the
next three are the beginning of the friendship between two girls who seem
to have special powers. I don't give a thing about the monsterslaying but I
really like the way they depict the friendship of both. Seen 5 eps.

Mouryou no Hako: Seen 3 eps and still have no clue what's going on. It's
dark, sinister and it seems to use a slow pace to tell it's story.
Supposedly it's about a murder investigation but the non-linear story
telling makes it hard to follow. I do like it though, I like my mysteries
dark :)

Tytania: 5 eps in and it's still not the big space opera I'm hoping for.
Tytania is a big and mighty clan with lots of people on lots of high places
but there is some small resistance, fuelled by the victory of Fan Huylick
in the first episode. He got fired after his victory though, he wasn't
supposed to win. Now he's on the run, trying to stay ahead of the Tytania
clan, helped along the way by a box of characters which are quite cliche.
I'll keep on watching because I simply like Space Opera, but it doesn't
live up to my expectations.

I aspire to be that compulsive, but am just too darn lazy.

I did try to list all the sf movies I watched way back in the day
when computer printout was on 15 inch wide fanfold paper, a
recent Travers Naran post did nudge me into listing all the DVDs
I do own, and I am trying to index a special interest magazine
for myself, but that's about it.

Not that I know of... What does it do for me that a .txt file
doesn't? ( I own the movie, I don't need genre or ratings info.
Actors, directors, screenwriters, I suppose might be a step
easier than going online to find which have what in common.)

Impressive. One thing I'd do is move the Doctor Who episodes
into chronological order (and I suspect "Pyramids of War" is
"Pyramids of Mars" in the original English).
Well, let me upload mine...

You could also try the Collectorz.com series.

While not literally possible for a normal pitcher, "rising fastball"
is a perfectly good baseball term that I hear often in US baseball
broadcasts. It's a four-seam fastball with enough velocity and
backspin so it doesn't sink nearly as much as a normal fastball. The
batter is fooled and swings under it.

I wonder if they'll learn the dreaded double-curve ball. :)

(Speaking of cartoon physics, there's nothing like the use of an
orbital elevator in the series Zone of Enders to point out the
cartoon physics of their giant fighting robot. I haven't had the
heart to continue watching the series since that.)
