Thanks for the memories!

Well, I *almost* buried my Peterson guide with him. Sorry about that.
Dunno if I could do with out mine (we have 2 or 3 "Western"s and
probably twice that "Eastern"s in various vehicles, places in the house,
and I don't know here else.

I still have my very first Peterson's--cover held on with duct tape,
pages water stained and notes here and there. One of my little
regrets in life is that I never got the opportunity to get Mr.
Peterson to sign it. I hope to have a "green"funeral when the time
comes and maybe I should have my Peterson's thrown in there with me as
well as my last collected toothpick holder! (I have over 600!!) Such
are the obsessions of my life!

Who was the radio character that mentioned his bird book frequently?
(I think I know the answer to this one.)

What was the character's name that played him?
(No clue.)

What was the name of the program?
I'm pretty sure I know the answer to that one.)

Just to update, we've got four nestlings in a gourd house as of 7/14. 7 or
8 adults are swooping around most of the day and there's almost always one
perched at the entrance to the gourd. Almost looks like it's standing guard
duty!

Eric, Thanks for the reply! We're not long-term Martin landlords so we
don't have a lot of experience at this--no logs or formal records, so it's
not scientific. I believe that these nests are later this year than in
the other years that we've had a colony but not all that much later.
Especially, considering the crazy spring weather we had. Seems that all
the flora and fauna is behind schedule this year.

I did a little checking on the web and I found that southward migration
begins within three weeks of the young leaving the nest. That would tend
to explain why the more southern colonies would leave earlier. Again,
thanks for the reply. I'm just learning about Martins and I know that I
have a lot more to learn!

Where are you located. Here in central Illinois USA I have martins
still on eggs. We usually don't notice them getting ready to leave

I'm in central Louisiana and they generally leave about now.

It seems odd that they would leave more northern areas later, but then
they do arrive later.

I lost the original message and thread ... but.
It would be nice to soar like an eagle and eat fish,
but they don't like deep fried walleye or grouper.
A Canada goose would get my vote. They have an
