Well, duck would be single. There have not been any migrating ducks in
large numbers in South Carolina for the past few years. Not me saying that,
but the consensus of those who count ducks. |

Via a ladder.
Then again, viaduct? |

Hi everybody.
I haven't posted regularly in a while, but I usually check the group
every so often. I haven't done any serious birding in years--four
young kids tend to take time--but since I moved to Florida from
Michigan a few years back, I added about ten birds to my life list
just walking the dogs.
I am from Washington State originally and all of my field guides are
Western US, so there are several birds I have seen that I haven't
identified.
That said, here is what I see on a typical walk in November:
Tri-colored, Little Blue, and GBH.
Anhingas
Cormarants (not sure which)
Tons of American Ibises
Cardinals
Downy or Hairy woodpeckers
Wood Stork
Sand Hill Cranes--these guys are everywhere, and they seem to take
pleasure in stopping traffic as they leisurely stroll across the
streets
Black Vultures
Crows--which are a treat, since they are rarely seen (at least by me)
in the Spring and Summer
Turkey Vultures
Mockingbirds
We have tons of small flocks of undetermined songbirds that are either
wintering here or stopping for a snack before they move on to the
Caribbean or Mexico. For those of you who have never witnessed the
wintering behavior of your spring/summer birds, its interesting.
Since none are mating or establishing territory, they are for the most
part silent, with only the occasional short note to help keep the
flock together. For me as a lifelong Northerner, it was quite odd to
see normally raucous species completely mute.
Of course, nearly every pond of any size houses at least one small (or
not so small) alligator--every sunny day during the cool months brings
them out to bask.

Wouldn't be any relation to Karl? I vaguely remember the movie, let alone
any of the lines. |

In central NC, the vultures are gathering. In a month or so, there
will be about 100 circling slowly above the top of the hill in late
afternoon. Many perch in two trees; it looks like it underneath.
Getting many goldfinches at the feeders, as well as titmice and
chickadees. Wrens seem to have left with the hummers.

I wondered where they went; haven't seen a TV in northern Ohio in two
or three weeks.
