Interesting on how different people hear and see different things.

I don't what you expected after a first meeting of Obama's economic team.
Perhaps you think a miracle is going to solve the economic crisis overnight?
That's naive.

I heard Obama say that there's not much he can do now, as Bush is still
calling the shots, but he outlined his priorities come inauguration. I heard
him clearly say that we needed another comprehensive economic stimulus
action, and that establishing a scenario that will result in new jobs was
essential.

In contrast, Bush's plan seems to be to buy $700 billion of worthless paper
from the banks so they don't suffer losses from the housing implosion.

I am incredibly impressed by Obama's economic team. I doubt that a more
qualified group of economic giants has been assembled before.

I'm not sure what "impressed" you. Typical Democrat style over typical
Democrat substance.
While the number of folks standing behind him gave him the "appearance" of
power and substance, there was actually nothing of substance said or done.
I was glad to hear this morning he apologized to Nancy Reagan for his
awkward attempt at joking.
In his defense, the reporter did ask a stupid question, as were most of the
questions.....

So, even dancers disagree about politics - who woulda thought <g>. The

bottom-line is we'll have to wait and see what Obama accomplishes after he's
had some time in office. It may be easier then to agree on the results.

I don't think "dance professor" or his expectations are relevant.
He was commenting about Don's expectations and impressions.
I had no expectations and they were met.:>)

For those who may have missed it, I have pasted the transcript below and I
make a few comments interspersed.

Transcript of remarks at Obama news conference

President-elect Barack Obama issued his opening remarks as prepared for
delivery at his media availability on the economy today in Chicago. His
remarks follow:

This morning, we woke to more sobering news about the state of our economy.
The 240,000 jobs lost in October marks the 10th consecutive month that our
economy has shed jobs. In total, we've lost nearly 1.2 million jobs this
year, and more than 10 million Americans are now unemployed. Tens of
millions of families are struggling to figure out how to pay the bills and
stay in their homes. Their stories are an urgent reminder that we are facing
the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime, and we must act swiftly to
resolve them.

The United States has only one government and one President, and until
January 20th of next year, that government is the current Administration. I
have spoken to President Bush, and I appreciate his commitment to ensuring
that his economic policy team keeps us fully informed as developments
unfold.

Immediately after I become President, I will confront this economic crisis
head-on by taking all necessary steps to ease the credit crisis, help
hardworking families, and restore growth and prosperity.

This morning, I met with members of my Transition Economic Advisory Board,
who will help guide the work of my transition team in developing a strong
set of policies to respond to this crisis. We discussed several of the most
immediate challenges facing our economy and key priorities on which to focus
on in the days and weeks ahead:

First, we need a rescue plan for the middle class that invests in immediate
efforts to create jobs and provides relief to families that are watching
their paychecks shrink and their life savings disappear. A particularly
urgent priority is a further extension of unemployment insurance benefits
for workers who cannot find work in the increasingly weak economy. A fiscal
stimulus plan that will jump-start economic growth is long overdue - and we
should get it done.

(I think sending checks to taxpayers who are going to have to send them back
and calling it stimulus is just plain stupid. It was stupid when Bush did it
and it will be stupid when Obama does it)

Second, we must address the spreading impact of the financial crisis on
other sectors of our economy: small businesses that are struggling to meet
their payrolls and finance their holiday inventories; and state and
municipal governments facing devastating budget cuts and tax increases. We
must also remember that the financial crisis is increasingly global and
requires a global response.

(Holiday inventories? Freudian slip? He's not the president until after the
holidays. Regarding municipal shortfalls, sending taxpayer money for other
taxpayer shortfalls is as stupid as writing hot checks)

The news coming out of the auto industry this week reminds us of the
hardship it faces - hardship that goes far beyond individual auto companies
to the countless suppliers, small businesses and communities throughout our
nation who depend on a vibrant American auto industry. The auto industry is
the backbone of American manufacturing and a critical part of our attempt to
reduce our dependence on foreign oil. I would like to see the Administration
do everything they can to accelerate the retooling assistance that Congress
has already enacted. In addition, I have made it a high priority for my
transition team to work on additional policy options to help the auto
industry adjust, weather the financial crisis, and succeed in producing
fuel-efficient cars here in the United States. I have asked my team to
explore what we can do under current law and whether additional legislation
will be needed for this purpose.

(If businesses make stupid decisions like paying people who don't produce
their income then they deserve their fate. Look into the health and
retirement benefits the auto industry agreed to, it's absurd)

Third, we will review the implementation of this Administration's financial
program to ensure that our government's efforts are achieving their central
goal of stabilizing financial markets while protecting taxpayers, helping
homeowners and not unduly rewarding the management of financial firms that
are receiving government assistance. It is critical that the Treasury work
closely with the FDIC, HUD and other government agencies to use the
substantial authority they already have to help families avoid foreclosure
and stay in their homes.

(Whether it's a business or an individual, I don't agree the government
should be paying anyone's bills other than the government's)

Finally, as we monitor and address these immediate economic challenges, we
will be moving forward in laying out a set of policies that will grow our
middle-class and strengthen our economy in the long-term. We cannot afford
to wait on moving forward on the key priorities that I identified during the
campaign, including clean energy, health care, education and tax relief for
middle class families.

(Idealistic talking points that don't really say anything. If he's saying
that he's going to move forward with major infrastructure projects then I do
agree with that)

My transition team will be working on each of these priorities in the weeks
ahead, and I intend to reconvene this Advisory Board to discuss the best
ideas for responding to these immediate problems.

Let me close by saying that I do not underestimate the enormity of the task
that lies ahead. We have taken some major actions to date, and we will need
further actions during this transition and subsequent months. Some of those
choices will be difficult, but America is a strong and resilient country. I
know that we will succeed if we put aside partisanship and work together as
one nation. And that is what I intend to do.

No incoming president in modern times has been so pressured to begin
governing, in effect, before he is sworn into office. With that in
mind, Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden brought the group of high-profile
financial and economic experts to confer.

Assembled to offer wide-ranging advice, the group of 17 included Mr.
Summers and his predecessor as Treasury secretary, Robert E. Rubin;
Paul A. Volcker, a former Federal Reserve chairman, and Eric E.
Schmidt, the chief executive of Google. The billionaire investor
Warren Buffett is to attend by speakerphone.

Other participants included Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa of Los

former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission; Anne
Mulcahy, chairman and chief executive of Xerox; Laura Tyson, former
chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors, and Gov.

LOL. When I saw that Villaraigosa was part of the group I blinked my eyes
and hit rewind to make sure I heard correctly. Maybe someone else can
explain why he's included, I sure don't understand. Is he a bright, creative
mind with gobs of economic knowledge? I don't know, but I don't think so.

Maybe I misunderstood and he's the mutt that Obama mentioned. ;-)

said we needed a stimulus, he didn't elaborate on what that stimulus would

Idealistic talking points? Your statement is nonsense. To paraphrase, 'We
have to monitor the situation and collect data, so we can take appropriate
action. Time is of the essence if we want to achieve the goals I set out.'
Quote:

He didn't say what he is going to do. He began his presser by saying:

I find it amusing that the man was elected only a few days ago, he doesn't

assume office for another two months, and some are already denigrating him
for not having a ready solution to the worst financial problem the country
has faced in almost a century.

Perhaps you and others who think as you do would be well served to get the
