Hi all,
Please excuse my rant but,
We need to protect the boreal forests in Canada, the breeding
habitat for many of North America's birds.
We need to stop the "drill, baby drill" idea because it only leads
to the destruction of our natural resources and cherished
public parks and lands.
We need to stop the needless slaughter of wolves in the west
and Alaska. Sarah Palin is in favor of a bounty on wolves, and
I don't know why - unless she wants more moose to hunt - and
that idea hasn't worked for many years.
We need to stop the slaughter of Yellowstone Bison who, in the
the winter, migrate south to find food and are slaughtered by
ranchers and government agents because of fear the bison will
spread a disease to cattle.
We need to recognize that Polar Bears are in serious trouble.

So many birds and animals are on the verge of extinction because
of destruction of habitat because "we need oil". I say B.S.,
take a bus, or light rail, or carpool, telecommute, 4 day
workweek, etc. and quit wasting gas sitting on the freeway
2 hours a day. We have to reduce our dependence on oil period!

If the animals and other creatures are in trouble, so are we.

Dick R,

I agree whole heartily; However, with respect to bison, the herd needs

to have some sort of control or it will eat itself out of food. I know
that in ND Bison are moved to other areas to control herd
size--Roosevelt natl. Park

Dick R,

If I wasn't retired already, I'd be glad to telecommute.

Unfortunately, I've never heard of the availability of any jobs
in my former line of work that allow telecommuting. Also,
most of the available jobs in that line of work are in rather
large metropolitan areas, with inadequate freeways to handle
morning and evening rushes well. The pay is enough to
keep attracting anyone qualified, though.

The main impediment to telecommuting is the typical boss's control
mania--he doesn't feel in charge if he can't watch you every minute. Few
white-collar jobs require every employee's presence every day. Even one
day per week working from home makes a significant difference in
traffic, pollution, and fuel use.

I quit my last job when my boss wanted me to come in more than once a
week (to attend a meeting in which I never spoke), and for eight years
I've done 100% of my work via telephone, fax, and Internet.

My bosses were more concerned with security - they didn't want what
I was working on to get outside the building if they could avoid it. Also,
it required rather expensive computers and rather expensive software.
They were, however, willing to let me work overtime while they weren't
there, and didn't insist on watching me very often while they were there.

Hey Lanny,

I worked for Sperry/Univac/Unisys for many years, and did programming
and other things - whatever they wanted me to do.
I was offered a voluntary lay off 4 years ago, and I jumped at it.
I received a regular paycheck for 32 weeks (1 weeks pay for every year
of employment) plus my company retirement. For a couple of years
before that I had telecommuted 2-3 days a week and my boss was always
happy to see me when I did come to work.
My last day was on a Friday and I went around to shake hands with the
people I had worked with for many years, but many of them had been laid
off on Thursday. :-(

Needless slaughter, I agree. Needful killing, I disagree. Easy to
say from urban streets. To many who live with them, wolves are no
different from rats or other pests.

No, the people of Alaska are. As governor, it is morally responsible

They already have. Google it up.
All wildlife move. Many are legally hunted for a variety of socially
acceptable reasons. You may not like them, but that does not make it
wrong.

Sometimes. Give me some examples re: energy aquisition ONLY. Of
course, it depends on the animal. How 'bout skeeters, roaches, rats,

Wow, quite a response on your part, but I don't think we could ever have
a rational discussion on environment and wildlife issues.

I accept that as capitulation.
