There are a lot of 3CCD digital cameras on the market, but so far,
nobody is offering any 5CCD version.

How come?

If we look at this page www.alt-vision.com/color_prisms_tech_data.htm
we know that prism stacking can produce not only the usual RGB color
separation of the 3CCD type, but also the 5CCD type, if anyone would
want to make one.

My question is --- since I'm not a scientist --- is there any real
benefit of having 5CCD as versus those we get today, the 3CCD ?

Thank you for your opinion !

There probably is... the real question is whether it's a big enough
difference to be worth the extra complexity and associated cost.
Three-pickup design goes back to the first days of color TV and
Plumbicon tube-based cameras; 3CCD concepts don't vary much from that
50-plus-year-old standard.

I can see a possible slight advantage in a four CCD camera, in terms of
one channel for black and white (the luminance). But I cannot see the
advantage of five channels, at least if the resulting images are to be
viewed by humans. The tri-stimulus color system works pretty well, and
the fourth channel would be of use only in a high dynamic range scene.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_space

It is a dirty little secret, but the common ways to break down colors don't
completely cover the color space of the human eye, even if implemented
ideally.

Just trying to cover more of the color space of the human eye, methinks.

Because all varieties of color television are based on the three selected
primary colors, red, green, and blue. There is no point breaking up the
spectrum into smaller divisions, because the information would just
have to be encoded back into RGB space to be compatible with all
the color TV infrastructure on the planet.

Note further that going from 3-chip to 5-chip is the wrong direction.
Several quite remarkable color cameras have been produced recently
using one CCD.

There would appear to be no benefit to conventional color television.
I suspect the technology in the reference cited is of interest to non-
television applications.

In addition to being very limited in choices., prices there are way
too high.
I checked out the Sony camcorders they have listed and, in addition to
being a well-known and reputable dealer, B&H was at least 20% cheaper
on every model.
