|
|
Hi everyone. I am planning on buying a double barrel shotgun chambered
in 20 gauge for hunting rabbits with my beagle. Can anyone help me
choose which one to buy? I am willing to spend no more than $1000
dollars. I have found a Stevens and a Stoeger that I like. I know that
the more you spend the better quality you get, but my budget is
limited. So any suggestions that you have will be most helpful. Thanks
in advance. |

Take a look at the Huglo shotguns distributed by CZ USA. They are good
serviceable guns and the frames are sized to the gauge. I've got two single
trigger Ringnecks in 20 and 28 gauge. They make a double trigger version,
Bobwhite, that runs a couple hundred less. I've got Browning, Stoeger and
Kasnar O/U and SxS guns and the CZ offering is closer to a Browning than the
others in terms of looks and feel in use.

It's a myth that the more you spend the better quality you get. If you
do some research (you have taken the right 1st step by posting your
question) you will find that often you can get more for less if you
are well informed. |

I've got a Stoeger Uplander in 20, It's not the prettiest gun out
there but is solid and functional just like the Savage 311s that I
still love were, and it's around $350 here. For me the fit and feel of
the Uplander were just about perfect the first time I picked one up,
you may be different though.

I agree that they are perfectly serviceable guns for hunting. I got a
Stoeger Condor 20g youth model for my sons to use. I tend to doubt that
they'd hold up to 10s of thousands of rounds like a Citori but that's OK...
not many hunting opportunities out there, except maybe doves in Argentina,
where you'd shoot that kind of volume!
There is a concern with relatively inexpensive guns with interchangeable
chokes. The risk is that the choke tubes cause the pattern to not line up
with the line of sight and point of aim. This happens when either the
barrel's choke threads and/or choke tubes aren't machined "square" relative
to the bore. I suggest patterning the gun and see if it shoots to point of
aim--might explain misses! A different tube may solve the problem. This
situation existed with the inexpensive adjustable chokes back in the early
'70s too. I had a Ted Steven's single barrel break action that shot in
different directions depending on what setting I choose!
