I have four favorites, each for a different purpose. I have a Browning
BLR in 358 Win for work in the brush, a Remington Mod 78 in 30-06 for
mid range, a Savage 110 FP in 300 Win Mag for long range and a
Winchester Mod 70 in 458 Win Mag for big game.

My favorite is also a Rem 700 ADL in 30-06. I bought it new in the
mid 1960's for $110. At that time, I mounted a Redfield 3x9 scope.
After years of good service, the Redfield was replaced with a Burris
3X12.

This rifle, and Nosler bullets, has served me well. Moose, elk,
caribou, deer, antelope, hogs, javelina, and a nilgai.

I bedded the action myself with ACRAGLAS, and I also manually lapped
the bore. Barrel is "free floating", with about .015 inch clearance.

The combo of me, my handloads, and the rifle is NOT a "great
grouper".....but it seems to always shoot "minute of meat".

Of late, at least for woods deer hunting, I started leaving all of my
high powered rifles in the safe, and use an iron sighted 8 3/8" S&W
629.
I really enjoyed the "re-learning" process. Helluva lot easier to
pack in and out too!
If I do my part, the gun has never failed me yet. My groups might
get a snicker, but they're good enough to get meat inside of 100yds
everytime.
I carry some 200gr lead round nosed specials too, for smaller fare, if
it arises.

I don't have a favorite but the one rifle I haven't traded off is a
Remington 700 BDL in /06 that I've owned it since 1984. It does everything
that needs being done with no great fanfare. I took a bull moose with this
rifle shooting hand loaded 180 grain Nosler Partitions at 325 yards. The 180
grain Nosler is the only bullet I use in this gun now. A few others that
have earned a permanent place in my safe are a Winchester Model 70 Classic,
a Browning A-Bolt II and a nice K98 Mauser that was sporterized in the 50's
by my brothers father in law. I filled the freezer last fall with the old
8mm Mauser.

While whittling down my collection of dependable shooters, I owned a bunch
of Ruger 77's (I don't miss them one bit), a Winchester Model 88 (it kicked
so hard it cracked a molar), my most accurate ever out of the box rifle...a
Remington 7600 in .243. The first three shot group I ever fired out of the
pump could be covered with a nickel (that group proved to be typical). I
sold this rifle to my brother for a reason I can no longer recollect...This
is one gun I do miss. Another accurate and dependable rifle I let go was a
Remington 742 in /06. This gun dropped every white tail I ever aimed it at.
People like to put down the Remington semi autos, but this particular rifle
never once let me down. I sold it so I could afford to purchase the Model
700.

My favorite rifle has become my little 20" Micro Med A-Bolt in .284
Win. w/ 139gr Hornady BTSP. I only hunt whitetails with it but it is
good medicine on them. I've also got a .280 Mountain rifle and 7mm
Rem Mag A-Bolt SStalker but the little .284 is ballistically better
through my chronograph than the .280 and only about 150fps off the 26"
Mag. I've also had other 7mm Mags and never got the expected
velocities from any of them when actually tested. It "loading charts"
better than it measures! The little Micro is so compact and handy and
the 139gr pushed by 57.0gr of W760 is giving 3026fps mv and 16 STD
with good hunting accuracy that I can't rationalize dragging the
long-tubed mag around the woods for its small advantage.

Most of my deer in the last 10 years have been taken with pistols in
deep woods/brush hunting. My favorite little rig is a S&W .41 Mag
Mountain Pistol with an Optima 2000. Very compact, light and it's
pleasant to have along.

My favorite is my German 98 7x57 Mauser with double set triggers. Its
never let me down through cold, ice, snow, heat, dirt etc. It can kill
anything on the planet. I have shot some very big and tough wild game
with it.

My favorite gun and caliber is the mod.700 bdl rem. in .270 win.
Growing up my hunting and shooting hero was the late, great shooting
legend Jack O'Conner.
Jacks gun of choice was the Win.mod 70 in .270 win.
He took nearly every big game species world wide with this gun.
I have had my .270 since the mid 1970s.
I set it up with a Redfield 3x9 wide view four plex.
I have taken Elk,Bear, deer,Boar,Caribou and numerous varmit species wiyh
this gun.
I still have it setup with the origional Redfield scope.
I have shot several thousand rounds over the 30 plus years and the gun
and scope have never failed or let me down.
I have hunted in rain, snow, heat and cold in Qubec hunting winter
caribou when the daytine temps were a balmy -25 f I made one shot kills
at 300 yard plus.
I have about 15 various makes of rifles and calibers, several others have
come and gone, but I will never own any gun that I have as much
confidence in as the old Rem. 700 .270.
I truely cherish this gun,
no amount of money could buy it.

Jack if you can read this from from hunters heaven maybe some day I
will have the honor of meeting you and we can shoot our .270s together.

Larry
