I read a historical novel (perhaps could be described as a historical
romance, but is more about family interactions in 2 generations) in
the late 1970's (perhaps early 1980's), sold as a paperback. I don't
remember the title or the author, but it was extremely well-written.
If someone could help me find the book/author, I would really
appreciate it.
The novel began in France, right after WWI ended. A young American
girl (Constance - Connie?) who was working as a volunteer nurse's aid
was courted by an American doctor and a French officer. She ends up
marrying the Frenchman (who is minor nobility- Count?) but stays
friends with the American doctor (who ends up marrying her friend).
The story jumps ahead to WWII, where the family estate is occupied by
the Germans. Connie's husband and only child (a son) are away fighting
and her daughter-in-law and infant grandson are staying with her. The
son is killed and later the daughter-in-law dies from a stray bomb.
The German officer that takes over the estate admires Connie, despite
the relationship of German conqueror and his suspicions of French
resistance. In the end after so much loss and heartache, her husband
survives and returns to her.

This is Frances Parkinson Keyes' CAME A CAVALIER. Connie was a Searcher, an
idea Mrs. Keyes used from a close friend who had been a Searcher.
