I bet the French will ignore it - sensible people!! Why do Brits always
"roll over" and follow these silly regulations?
Graham

But....but...but we are BRITISH; we keep the rules. To do otherwise would
not be cricket after all.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there, Jane. Queueing is an

example. What other nation is so patient (in the main) about queueing and
has such a sense of fair play about it? "I think you were here first.."
I understand it originates from having to queue for food during rationing in
WWII.
I have a German friend who occasionally comes over to stay with me. Now
Germans are great on following rules to the letter but seem to have no idea
what queueing is about. I had to have a little word at the bus stop about
waiting her turn. She had no idea.
It's the same with the sunbeds on holiday that gets us Brits so cross
(because we have talked about things like this, and the war and whatever
else is different between our countries) Apparently this is accepted
German culture and she was shocked to hear how much it upsets us Brits.

When I was over in Germany for the first time I was amazed how clean it was.
There was absolutely no litter and the countryside was free of dumped
"anything." They knock the socks off Britain for recycling though, even in
such a remote village that I was in (20-odd houses) 12km one way and 10 km
the other to the nearest shop, they seemed to have it all in hand to get
everything spirited away.
Even when we visited Hamburg 2 hours away, which is a huge city there was no
litter at all.
It could help, I suppose, that Germans do not seem to eat crisps Wink
No, that's just a joke. If Germans did eat crisps they would dispose of the
packet they came in very responsibly, it seems to me.
So what to do about litter here? More education for schoolchildren? More
fines for anyone who drops any litter?
Whatever the Germans are doing to achieve this, we should be doing. No-one
drops litter there.
I asked my friend about it and she said "why would you want to pollute your
countryside?"
There's no answer to that, is there?

Disapproval! My daughter lives in Germany and she has an indoor bin with
dividers for different types of waste. Communal bins and each takes a turn
to put those bins out. Any mistake is met with fierce condemnation.

Indeed- and it can't be just schoolchildren who are responsible for the
appalling amount of waste to be found alongside country roads etc.-
discarded by people as they drive past. It's not always immediately
visible- but have a look behind the grass a few feet away from the
roadside, and the litter is appalling. It's like one long continuous
rubbish dump in some areas.

Many cakes here have whipped cream. Local taste I guess. Some of my
italianate cakes are vulnerable for many ingredients that need the chill to
remain firm. My favorite: three thin layers of Pan di Spagna-- a sponge,
each one is liberally sprinkled with grappa perfumed with raspberries-- no
sugar, each layer but the top one is then spread with raspberry preserves,
then chocolate mousse. Once assembled the whole thing is frosted with
whipped cream and covered with fresh raspberries. It does not dry out,
Dave.

Same thing with Norwegian bløtkake- a variety of thing are used to
moisten the sponge, depending on the recipe- some with alcohol, some
not.

Yes, they would need refrigeration. I hadn't thought about them.

When you say sprinkled, how much do you mean? Can you expand on that
stage of making it please? I have come late in life to cooking, hence my
lack of knowledge.

That sounds like my sort of cake :-)

By the way, I was thinking about plainer cakes than the one you describe
above.

Never measured, but enough to moisten the sponge but not make it soggy. I
couldn't buy any this year, so since my raspberries started really bearing,
I made it. It's just clean berries in a bottle, grappa poured over. Add
berries as they come from the bushes. Itìs perfect those parts of the
season when you get a handful each day.

It's sort of cake for people who don't cook. But it really is scrumptious.
Peple ask for it in summer.

I might have to find a substitute for the whipped cream though, I am not
a lover of it. There will be lots of alternatives I can use. (my
preferences are not too sweet)

Well, you can hardly make it in winter, unless you use those tasteless
imported fruits.

Going back to your recommendation of fresh stuffed pasta, I have found a
source in a local supermarket Smile)

Many thanks
